Exporting goods to the UK

Are you exporting from the Netherlands to the UK? In that case, you have to file a declaration using the Dutch customs declaration system. By doing so, you are asking Customs for permission to export goods outside the European Union. Customs may want to inspect your shipment. When the goods are released by customs, the transporter can leave for the UK.

Importing goods into the UK

Are the goods on their way to port? Then you need to submit import declarations. If your carrier is using a ferry or the Eurotunnel, customs in the UK will want the carrier to enter all relevant information (import declarations, a transit document and truck identification details) into the Goods Vehicle Management System (GVMS). The GVMS system will generate a unique number that allows the lorry to board the ferry directly.

Don't forget the import duties

When importing into the UK, you may have to pay import duties. This depends on the agreements between the UK and the EU, the nature of the goods and the origin of the goods. In general, you do not have to pay import duties in the UK if the goods were manufactured in the EU..

The person responsible for the export and import declaration depends on the delivery terms (incoterms) agreed upon by the buyer and seller. We recommend negotiating FCA or DAP delivery with trading partners instead of EXW or DDP.

Exceptional customs obligations
